Wednesday morning, the Appalachian State Board of Trustees voted unanimously to hire Jason Capel as head coach of the men’s basketball program.
“I’m really humbled by being up here right now,” Capel said at a press conference Wednesday afternoon. “This means a lot to me; I’m very excited. I’m so proud to sit up here and be the leader of [this team]. We’re going to work hard, and were going to do it together.”
Capel, who served as an assistant under Buzz Peterson last season, is the youngest coach in NCAA Division I at 30 years old.
Athletics director Charlie Cobb said he chose Capel over former assistant Matt McMahon for his presence, eagerness to learn, and basketball pedigree – Capel’s father is an assistant for the Charlotte Bobcats and his brother Jeff is the head coach at Oklahoma.
“I made a decision in the best interest of [the players], and that is a responsibility I took very seriously,” Cobb said. “I knew what I needed to do to take this basketball program forward on what I call this quest to make basketball relevant in this community and on this campus.”
Capel’s contract is a four-year deal worth $150,000 a season plus performance based incentives.
