No Cheering in the Press Box: Good riddance, coach Buzzkill
Monday, 19 April 2010 21:50

Last week, I wrote that Buzz Peterson would never be satisfied in Boone.

I wrote that people don’t change.

Well, it looks like I was right.

Peterson resigned Friday morning to take the head coaching job at UNC-Wilmington. Appalachian State is now in the market for a men’s basketball coach for the second time in less than a year.

This episode with Peterson confirms my suspicions.

Peterson is not a basketball coach, he is a prostitute: he follows wherever the most money is and he moves on once he has taken everything he can from one school.

When he was hired last May, Peterson liked to talk about how he was a changed person and how he was here at ASU to make a lasting impression.

After what has happened, it is clear Peterson never cared about Appalachian.

He called Athletics Director Charlie Cobb while he was driving to Wilmington to inform Cobb he was resigning. Peterson is not even man enough to meet Cobb face-to-face.

Peterson did not inform his players he was leaving. He left that duty to the athletics department.

Peterson talked all season about how much he enjoyed coaching the team and how much he liked his players. Well, apparently he didn’t think enough of them to tell them what he was doing.

I feel bad for all the players who got burned by Peterson, but I feel for Anthony Breeze the most.

Breeze transferred from Coastal Carolina, where he had been recruited by Peterson before Peterson left

Coastal to go to the Bobcats. Breeze came to ASU just to play for Peterson. What is he supposed to do now, transfer again? He has already wasted a year of his eligibility for Peterson. I hope he is smart enough to not waste another year on that jerk.

When I watched UNCW’s press conference where they introduced Peterson as head coach, I couldn’t help but laugh.

He was blowing the same smoke up their butts that he did to Appalachian last year.

“Every time I’ve moved, there’s been a reason,” Peterson said. “Whether it’s been for family or to better myself in the profession, I made the move for a reason. I’m sick and tired of making those moves. We’re ready to put roots somewhere and stay there.”

It was hysterical watching UNCW boosters start clapping like madmen at that comment. I almost felt bad for them. They have no idea that soon enough they will be looking for a new coach after Peterson abandons them for greener pastures.

Peterson also had some interesting comments for his new players.

“I want [the UNCW players] to know me as a father figure away from home, somebody they can trust and go to,” Peterson said.

I wonder how Donald Sims feels about that comment. Or Marcus Wright. Or Breeze. Or Andre Williamson.

Or the new recruits Peterson got to commit to ASU.

In the long run, ASU will be better now that Peterson is gone. Hopefully they will get someone who is actually committed to building the program.

But in the meantime, all I have to say is this: go screw yourself, Buzz.
