Vulgar language incites poor publication standards
I am writing to request that The Appalachian raise its moral standard.
In the April 20 issue, page 8, in a staff column, Rob Jenkins stated, “go screw yourself, Buzz” (directed against Buzz Peterson). Such language is abusive and vulgar.
A strong advocate for The Appalachian reminded me that the paper has its First Amendment right, that this language is now standard terminology(?), and that one can applaud the writer’s journalistic enthusiasm.
Fine. I am certainly not arguing against the First Amendment or a writer’s zeal. The issue is a moral matter.
I am persuaded that as the “news” media has stooped to such abusive language and vulgarity it incites more abuse and vulgarity in our society.
Of course the media businesses do not care about the consequences, as they laugh all the way to the bank. They have a product to sell.
I am asking that The Appalachian not lower itself as well, but actually try to raise the bar, to better our moral climate.
If readers of this letter agree with me, I encourage them to write the editor at

and ask The Appalachian to “raise the bar.”
