Coming to Appalachian State University as a transfer student in 2007, I knew that ASU had a good football team.
I was aware of the back-to-back national championships in 2005 and 2006. I had heard about the lightning-fast, ever-elusive Armanti Edwards. I was aware of ASU’s status as a Division 1 FCS power. I thought App State football had reached its peak.
That was before Sept. 1, 2007.
For you poor souls that do not immediately recognize that date, it was the day that should be dubbed a citywide holiday every year until the end of time. That was the day David went into Goliath’s home and smacked him around in front of 106,000 of his closest friends. It was the day the Mountaineers beat the No. 5 ranked Michigan Wolverines.
For those of you who were not yet enrolled in school here, I am sorry. It was one heck of a fight-song-screaming, goalpost-destroying, good-times-having kind of day.
Yet, even though that may be Appalachian State football’s most lasting achievement in terms of historical significance is concerned, it is hardly the only one.
In the last four years, ASU football has had a number of other noteworthy accomplishments. Some of those include two national championships (in 2006 and 2007), four Southern Conference championships, four wins over archrival Western Carolina, and two Walter Payton awards given to the nation’s most outstanding player (Armanti Edwards won the award in 2008 and 2009, and in doing so, became the first two-time winner of the award). Also, during that time ASU football compiled an astounding 49-9 record.
Aside from the accomplishments, the past four years have included some of the greatest players to ever wear the black.
Names like Kevin Richardson, Dexter Jackson, Corey Lynch and Armanti Edwards, along with countless others have helped make Appalachian State football what it is today.
So seniors, look back on your years here as a time when Appalachian State football was at its finest, and always remember: it’s great to be a Mountaineer!
