Legends hip-hop takeover scheduled for Legends Friday
Wednesday, 01 February 2012 22:31

In a change from its usual pace, Legends will feature an all hip-hop lineup Friday.

Boone-based act BPL will headline. Campus sensation MykeyT (junior business management major Michael Taylor),Young Toon (alumnus Kerry Lamar) and DJ Ladro will open.

BPL's trumpet player and MC, senior music industry studies major Michael Martin, said the band leans "a little more toward hip hop" than funk.

The band, which has a new full-length album underway, includes a three-piece horn section, drums, bass and keys.

"We put on a hell of a show," keyboardist Rhett Huffman said. "It's some high-level musical sh-t."

MykeyT will open the show, with a mix of covers and original tracks.

The rapper recently played a show at Klondike Café, which he said around 200 people attended.

"It was packed out," he said. "It was really good and a lot of people came out. It was a really cool thing."

The Asheville native is currently working on a mixtape, which doesn't have a release date yet. He's also on his way to a bachelor's degree and plans to pursue a MBA at Appalachan State University.

"Once I do that, I'm going to start my own record label," he said. "I can produce tracks myself and I'll have my studio. I want to start my own record label and sign myself to a deal and then be able to go out and be a producer for another artist."

Appalachian alumnus Kerry Lamar, or Young Toon, will open as well. He said it's a strange feeling performing where he used to live and go to school.

"I actually went over to the theatre building, Chapell Wilson, and was just walking in the halls," he said. "It's such a surreal feeling."

Young Toon raps about politics and religion and has a mixtape, "Prodigal Son," currently available.

The final opening act, DJ Ladro, hails from Chapel Hill and makes beats for rap artist K.O. Kid.

Doors open at 9 p.m. with tickets $3 in advance for students and $5 at the door for everyone. This event is BYOB with proper identification.
