ohleger_kelsey Unless you’ve been locked in a closet on the fourth floor of Belk Library for the past two weeks, you should know about the earthquake that occurred in Haiti on Jan. 12.
We’ve all known about it, but unless it directly affected you, why would you really concern yourself with a matter that occurred over 1200 miles away?
What could a poor, struggling, busy college student possibly do to improve the situation?
These are the pathetic questions I asked myself to help justify my lack of contribution to the disaster.
But it wasn’t until last week when recently unemployed Conan O’Brien unintentionally helped me realize I was wrong.
O’Brien was released from his role on the Tonight Show and during his last episodes he made every effort to waste NBC’s money for pointless comedy.
After bits including the worlds most expensive car, the Bugatti Veyron, dressed as a mouse, the 2009 Kentucky Derby winning horse wearing a mink snuggie, and a fossil of a large sloth purchased from the Smithsonian, he spent estimated millions of the company’s money.
Watching these skits made me feel like something was not right when over 150 thousand lives were claimed by a natural disaster only the week before.
With this on my mind, I returned back to my apartment to find bags of items my roommate collected to donate because “people in Haiti need them more.”
So this is when I decided, with so many opportunities to help, there is no excuse for any of us to not contribute in some very simple way.

On Feb. 1, ASU students are asked simply to wear something red, “of the fire engine variety,” with hopes that the outburst of the color will encourage others to donate to the cause. Donation boxes will be spread around campus for people to contribute as little or as much as possible. All proceeds donated to Samaritan’s Purse.
