The University of North Carolina Board of Governors announced a new UNC-system president today following an emergency meeting held this morning.
Tom Ross, current president of Davidson College, will replace outgoing President Erskine Bowles, who announced his retirement in February.
After receiving his undergraduate degree from Davidson in 1972, Ross earned a law degree from the UNC and later was appointed to the N.C. Superior Court by former Governor Jim Hunt.
Ross has been the president at Davidson since 2007.
Appalachian State University Chancellor Kenneth E. Peacock has worked with Ross on the Southern Conference Council of Presidents.
"The University of North Carolina will continue to have capable, visionary leadership in Tom Ross, and I look forward to working with him in this new role," Peacock said in a university e-mail. "I am excited about getting our new president on campus as soon as his schedule allows and sharing with him the unique character of Appalachian, the great work being done on campus and our vision for the future."
