Pick a side: early voting for primary elections has started in the High Country.
Candidates for the U.S. Senate, Watauga County Clerk of Superior Court, the Watauga County School Board, the Watauga Court of Appeals Judge, the N.C. State Senate District 5, and the U.S. House of
Representatives District 5 are sparring off to win seats.
On-campus voting opened Monday and will continue until April 30. May 4 is the official primary election.
Students who wish to vote can do so in the Multicultural Center in Plemmons Student Union until April 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Voting will take place May 4 on campus in Farthing Auditorium and Plemmons Student Union’s Price Lake Room.
Despite the relatively high stakes for a number of candidates, voter turnout has been less than optimal, Jane Hodges, Watauga County Board of Elections director said.
“It’s been very low, we’re disappointed,” Hodges said. “We want to encourage everyone to get out and vote.”
Watauga residents registered unaffiliated may still vote in the primaries, but they will not have to worry about changing their party affiliation permanently.
“Unaffiliated [voters] can declare [during voting],” Hodges said. “They only declare for that election period.”
