Black History Month began Wednesday and will last through the month of February. If you’d like to mark the occasion, check out one of these events – hosted by several NPHC organizations, the Appalachian Popular Programming Society and the history department.
Gospel Choir Performance
The Appalachian State University Gospel Choir will celebrate Black History Month Feb. 8 from 4 to 5 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union’s Summit Trail Solarium. The choir will sing a spiritual slave song, Hlonolofatsa (pronounced low-no-la-fat-sa) and another traditional spiritual. Tuskegee Airmen Film and Lecture
APPS will sponsor a showing of “The Tuskegee Airmen,” a film that focuses on the only combative African-American pilots to engage in battle during World War II. Following the movie, Retired Captain Harvey R. Alexander will speak about his experience as a member of the Tuskegee Airmen. The event will take place Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union’s Greenbriar Theater. The event is co-sponsored by the history department and the department of military science and leadership. The Beauty of Natural Women
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will host “The Beauty of Natural Women” Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union’s Multicultural Center. The fraternity will bring in four to five women who have chosen to avoid the use of synthetics for the purpose of enhancing appearance. The goal is to emphasize the importance of natural beauty. Black Wax Museum
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will sponsor a Black Wax Museum Feb. 28 from 8 to 10 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union’s Blue Ridge Ballroom. The wax museum will bring famous African Americans to life and attempt to tell their stories.
