Appalachian professor dies after battle with cancer

An Appalachian State University professor died Saturday after a year-long battle with breast cancer.

Sharon S. Pennell was a professor in Appalachian’s department of communication for the past 24 years.

Pennell, who was born in Pulaski, Va., lived in Lenoir and was the chairperson of the Caldwell County Board of Education.

Pennell earned several education and speech awards throughout her professional career, including the Lenoir Business and Professional Women’s Club Career Woman of the Year Award, and Caldwell County Distinguished Woman of the Year Award in 1992.

Pennell was also named the North Carolina Career Woman of the Year in 1992.

She published more than 20 articles on the state and national level throughout her professional career.

She is survived by her husband, Darrell Clayton Pennell; her son, Steven Walter Pennell; her two brothers, W.E. Rozzy Smith and Barry W. Smith; and nieces and nephews.

Memorials can be made to the Sharon Pennell Scholarship for Teachers through the Caldwell County Schools Education Foundation located at 1914 Hickory Blvd. in Lenoir.
