Appalachian’s Teaching Fellows, Walker Fellows, impACT Team and Appalachian Student Ambassadors took the majority of awards, which ranged from Best Member Development, Best Advertising/Marketing (Appalachian Popular Programming Society) and Presidential awards.
The Society of Professional Journalists won Most Improved Organization.
The council cited SPJ President and senior journalism major Laura M. Tabor’s ability to overcome organizational and advising issues to have a successful year.
The impACT Team, which earned the Appalachian Image Award and the Community Service Award, had to overcome a transitional year to achieve the success members enjoyed this year.
“I’ve seen this transformation in our team,” senior non-profit development major and impACT Team co-chair Kelly E. McRell said. “I think the team definitely deserves [the awards]. We have a team of incredible people.”
Club Council Chair Mallory E. Hole, senior advertising major, said the process of reviewing nominations for the awards was an inspiring experience.
“I’m not making it up when I say these are the people that make Appalachian what it is,” Hole said.
Club Council is responsible for approving new clubs and organizations, allocating university money to clubs and working to improve the quality of club activity on campus.
The council recently elected its executive council for the 2010-11 school year.
Incoming Chair of Club Council and junior public relations major Brittany R. Burdine said the council is hoping to expand its membership next year to include representatives from every part of campus involvement.
“That way when new clubs are being started we can hear input from different organizations,” Burdine said.
