Photo by Tommy Penick | The Appalachian. Appalachian State University’s own on-campus brewery announced this month a logo design competition offering a cash reward of $250, as well as a pair of tickets to the 2010 High Country Beer Fest.
“We thought it would be a great idea to involve other members of the university community and the community at large,” Brett F. Taubman, assistant professor of chemistry and member of the Ivory Tower Brewery Board of Directors said. “It’s something that you can add to your portfolio and hopefully it will be highly visible one day.”
The competition is open to anyone, including students and members of the community.
The board of directors will select five to 10 finalists in April. Those submissions will be posted online for public voting.
Submitters under 21 can still enter, but tickets to the High Country Beer Fest are restricted to those who are of age.
Taubman said the brewing class is made up of students with a variety of academic backgrounds. Ivory Tower sought to make the operation as multi or cross-disciplinary as possible.
“Operating a brewery really does take so many different talents,” he said. “There’s the scientific and technical side, but there’s also the business side and the artistic side.”
Logo submissions should be designed for letterhead, t-shirts, posters, hats, beer bottles, labels, as well as a beer tap handle. They should include the words, “Ivory Tower Brewery,” according to the competition guidelines.
“It should be thought about as a corporate logo,” Taubman said. “Something that is simple and straightforward, to the point, but also gets the whole Ivory Tower theme across, which is kind of a satirical view of academia.”
